Independent market analyses place the global BNNT market at roughly US$40–50 million in 2024, with projections toward US$85–90 million by the early 2030s at high-single-digit to low-double-digit annual growth. These are small figures for a material this capable — and the analysts themselves attribute the limited size to "poor large-scale manufacturing capacity and high production expenses."
Why the price is what it is
High-quality BNNT sells for roughly $150–450 per gram, against $10–20 per gram for research-grade carbon nanotubes — a 10–40× premium on a like-for-like basis (bulk industrial multi-walled CNT sells for far less, but is not a comparable product). The instinct is to assume the raw materials or the energy must be expensive. They are not:
- Energy is negligible. The fundamental energy to convert boron and nitrogen into boron nitride is a fraction of a cent per gram.
- Boron feedstock is modest. A few dollars per gram of product at reasonable yields — and cheaper still from abundant minerals.
- The cost is selectivity and throughput. The overwhelming majority of the price comes from how much feedstock actually becomes tubes (rather than sheets or amorphous material), the cost of purifying what's left, and the slow rate at which good tubes are produced.
This matters because it points precisely at where a manufacturing breakthrough has to happen — and where it doesn't. Chasing cheaper boron or cheaper energy addresses the wrong few percent of the problem.
Demand is bifurcated
